Underpinner / V-nailer

Why does my underpinner jam and fail to fire the V-nail?
Over 60% of jamming cases trace to glue residue in the distributor block. Clean with IPA every 5,000 nails, hone driver blade burrs, use dry PTFE spray only, and stick to one V-nail brand.
The machine cycles but no nail comes out — what is dry firing?
Usually a broken or dislodged constant-force pusher spring. Blow the pusher track clear weekly, verify spring tension, confirm nail size matches machine setting, and inspect for broken nail fragments.
The nail goes in halfway then bends — what causes this?
Driver blade misalignment or a clogged V-nail block. Check blade for lateral bend, clean the channel, verify nail brand/size, and for hardwood use 7 mm + 7 mm stacking instead of a single 15 mm nail.
What lubricant should I use — and what should I avoid?
Use dry PTFE spray on nail channels, white lithium grease on sliding rails, and ISO VG 32 pneumatic tool oil (2–3 drops daily) at the air inlet. Never use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants on pneumatic passages.
How do I choose between hardwood and softwood V-nails?
HW nails for oak/maple/walnut; SW for pine/cedar; MDF-specific nails for composite. Mismatch causes splitting or proud nails. Test-fire into scrap before production runs.

Pneumatic system

I hear a constant hissing — how do I locate the air leak?
Pedal valve hiss worsens when depressed → worn O-ring. Cylinder body hiss → piston seal blow-by. Apply soapy water to fittings. Monthly leak test: pressurise, shut off compressor, gauge should drop <5% in 15 min.
What air pressure for hardwood vs. softwood?
Hardwood 6–7 bar; softwood 4–5 bar; MDF 5–6 bar. Validate on scrap before production and monitor with a live gauge — not just the compressor dial.
Why is an FRL unit so important?
90% of pneumatic failures trace to moisture or contamination. Filter traps water/rust, regulator stabilises pressure, lubricator micro-doses oil to protect O-rings. Add a refrigerated dryer upstream in high-production shops.
The cylinder moves but driving force feels weak — why?
Internal cylinder blow-by from worn piston rings. Run a chamber leak test, replace seal kit if needed, ensure compressor tank ≥50 L, and use ≥6 mm supply hose.

Join quality & corner gaps

Gap on the face side of my corner — how do I fix it?
Top open = insufficient vertical clamp pressure. Use the business card test, reposition the top pad over the nail fire point, switch to felt pads on curved profiles, and audit saw angle (0.1° error compounds).
Back opens but the face is tight — what's happening?
Bottom open = cutting angle exceeding 45°. Re-calibrate saw detent with a digital gauge, check fence squareness, clear fence debris, and move the first V-nail toward the outer edge.
Tight corners but a step between pieces — why?
Usually moulding warp or thickness variation. Sight down each length, measure thickness within ±0.2 mm, and use adaptive silicone top pads on bowed surfaces.
Glue keeps getting into the rebate and jamming glass?
Clean the rebate corner immediately after firing each nail. Apply glue only to the miter face, not the rebate channel.

Miter saw / cutting quality

Cut surface has chatter marks — what causes blade runout?
Axial or radial runout from stamped flanges, arbor bearing play, or debris under the flange. Measure with a dial indicator; >0.05 mm face runout needs replacement or machining.
How do I eliminate chip-out on fine mouldings?
Install a zero clearance insert, use –5° to –7° negative hook Hi-ATB blades (80–100 tooth), add a sacrificial MDF rear fence, and use TCG blades for aluminium.
Dust goes everywhere — how can I improve extraction?
Factory dust bags capture only coarse chips. Add a big-gulp hood with 100 mm rigid ducting, dual-point extraction (high static at blade + high CFM at rear), and avoid flex hose with tight bends.

Maintenance & calibration

What does a daily maintenance routine look like?
Under 10 minutes: check FRL filter and drain water trap, add 2–3 drops pneumatic oil if no auto-oiler, brush fence faces clear, visual blade inspect, drain compressor tank at shift end.
How often should I clean the distributor block?
Every 5,000 nails as preventive maintenance, or immediately after any jam event. IPA or specialist solvent — never oil-based cleaners.
